Fire detector

The fire detector combines smoke and heat sensors.

Before we started on the enclosures for the fire detector and the security system keypad (another project we developed for Tiras), we set the main task: a modern, simple and easily recognisable design. When we began, competitors' devices were clearly ahead of Tiras in appearance. We had to create a new look while using well-proven mechanics.

The devices had to fit harmoniously into any interior. Their forms had to be simple and clear, without drawing too much attention.

The goal we set before starting: it had to be unusual. The fire detector market is crowded, and everyone makes more or less the same thing. The Tiras detector had to be different. And because the production cost was tightly limited, it needed a simple form without undercuts.

The resulting design concept has a taut surface with three large openings and is very different from anything else on the market.

During development the industrial designer faced difficulties related to the device's function. The detector has to meet quite strict fire-test standards, so we ran experiments and kept adjusting the design, while trying to keep the look the client had already liked in the sketches.
